The Ice Monster by David Walliams

The ice Monster is a book about a ten year old orphan, Elsie, who escaped from a terrible orphanage. She lived in the street, sleeping in a tin bath and barely getting enough to eat. Over time she became a skilled thief, and was able to get some food into herself. She started sneaking into a museum, fascinated by the wonders she saw. When a dead baby mammoth was dug from the north pole, It was sent to the museum. Elsie wanted to see it, and made friends with an old woman who cleaned the museum, called Dotty. Wanting to help the mammoth, Elsie, Dotty, and a suspicious scientist work together to perform the impossible, bringing the creature back to life! This was a hilarious book filled with humour, and set in 1899.
